Although there is no definite evidence that GM crops can exert adverse effects on the environment, many people have raised concerns. Therefore, the risks of GM crops for the environment, and especially for biodiversity, must be extensively assessed before cultivation.
However, GM crops can in some cases, be environmentally-friendly. Many varieties of GM crops have been modified for pest-resistance and little or no spraying of pesticides is required for the cultivation of such crops. This can in turn have a positive impact on the environment.
